Perfume Care: 7 Tips for Storing and Preserving Fragrances

If you’ve just purchased your favorite perfume, you’ll want to make it last as long as possible. After all, perfumes can be quite expensive. Whether it’s a rare vintage scent or a new arrival, proper storage and handling are essential to preserve the original fragrance. Perfume oils and alcohols break down when exposed to humidity, heat, and light. Here are some tips and tricks to help you store your favorite fragrances and extend their lifespan.

Perfume Care

1. To preserve the quality of your perfume, avoid exposing it to direct sunlight. Sunlight can cause the fragrance to degrade and alter its scent over time. Store your perfume in a dark place, such as a closet, and keep it behind your clothes if you cannot dedicate a drawer to your collection. This is the most important tip to keep in mind.

2. Protect your perfume from excessive heat. Keep your bottles away from sources of heat to maintain their quality. The cool interiors of your closet make for a perfect storage location for your perfume. However, avoid temperature extremes as they can cause degradation of the fragrance. Storing perfumes in the refrigerator is an option, but be sure to keep them away from foods that can absorb the scent, such as butter or cheese.

3.It is important to store perfume in a dry location. Avoid keeping bottles in the bathroom due to humidity. It is recommended not to store perfumes in the bathroom, unless you have a large bathroom with a cupboard that is away from all the steam.

4.Some of us like to display perfumes on the dresser or shelf, especially those in beautifully crafted glass bottles. If you must, use frosted or opaque bottles to prevent light exposure.

5. Do not shake perfume bottles – shaking them will cause them to spoil faster. Handle the bottle with care.

6. Transfer perfume with care – whenever possible, purchase perfumes that come in airtight spray bottles. If you must transfer them, do so carefully. Select an opaque glass bottle and act promptly as exposure to air can degrade the perfume over time. If you prefer to spritz perfume frequently, purchase an airtight travel-sized atomizer that you can carry in your handbag.

7. Remember to replace the cap as soon as possible after applying perfume to avoid leaving it exposed for long periods of time. Clean any applicators you use. Sometimes perfumes come with an applicator wand or a roll-on instead of a spray bottle. In these cases, dirt can be introduced into the liquid. Be sure to clean the applicator every time you use it.
